"Inconspicuous and nowadays rather unnoticed at the western exit of Meerholz (in the direction of Niedermittlau) is an approx. One meter large machined sandstone - the gate stone. The stone is not a" normal "boundary stone, but a Neolithic relic Stone is therefore approx. 4,000 - 5,000 years old! On closer inspection you can see, among other things, the depiction of an ax and a choker. On the back is carved "Am alten Pfortenstein". However, this writing was only added after the find Stein laying a gas pipeline in Rathausstrasse in 1929. At the initiative of the pharmacist Otto Köbert, it was erected at this point. A document was built into the foundation that commemorates events in 1929 and is signed by the dignitaries of the village Stein at the suggestion of Hans Kreutzer, who suspected the historical importance of the stone early on, from students of the Fachh ochschule Mainz closely examined and measured.
