The museum, founded in 2002, is located on the site of the Ewald colliery, which was closed a year earlier. Most of the objects come from the Ewald-Continuation mine, but some came into the collection on loan from club members or through public appeals. Many of the machines were still in use at the time the mine was closed.

Another part of the museum shows original furnishings typical of miners' apartments from the 1950s to 1960s. A self-contained part of the collection is Ewald's former teaching gallery. On display here are, among other things: a conveyor belt, an extension for a coal planer with control device, a head loader and a monorail overhead conveyor. There is also a complete blind shaft with a winding machine, a weather door and a mine locomotive.
