According to legend, this is the place where the legendary robber chief Johann Böckler, known as Schinderhannes, attacked the messenger Sauer and left him unconscious. The first cross was erected in 1814 by the messenger Johann Sauer, but has been damaged and replaced several times since then. The truth about the attack, or whether it even took place, is nowhere to be proven. The Sauer Cross is probably just a shrine as an expression of the messenger's piety.
