The pits 'Katharina 1' and 'Katharina 2' are among the oldest in the Imsbach mountain area. They were also probably the most productive mining sites for copper ore. Cobalt was also found here and occasionally some silver was extracted.

The name of these pits is probably derived from St. Katharina, who was venerated as one of the 14 helpers in need, because documents from the 18th century also refer to the "St. Catharinengrube" (today "Katharina 2"). The Katharina 1 mine used to be called "Katharina Erbstollen".

The open-cast mines of the two pits, which are quite large today, were primarily built in the operating periods around and after 1900. Large expansions that used to be underground have also merged into this. In the walls of the opencast mine you can see the remains of a tunnel from the early phase of mining that are no longer accessible.

In all honesty, you don't see a lot of details because of the distance. But you already get an impression of the size of the pit at that time.

Due to the distance, little can be seen, you only get an impression of the size of the area, which is fenced in.

A beautiful mountain trail above the pits. From time to time you catch an impressive view of the pits. Unfortunately too far away to be able to see details.
