Until the beginning of the 1990s, American nuclear warheads were allegedly stored there and guarded by the Bundeswehr. Part of the structure and location of the buildings can still be seen.

The camp is designed in such a way that only American soldiers from the 84th US Army Field Artillery Detachment can enter the “inner restricted area”. The “outer restricted area” is guarded by the so-called “host nation”, the soldiers of the sixth battery of the 250 rocket artillery battalion based in the Eberhard Finckh barracks.
At the end of the 1980s, the camp resembled an impregnable fortress. A consequence of the growing peace movement and the fact that the Soviet secret service repeatedly makes attempts to spy on the camp.
