I have to contradict Dieter Gehweiler. From Meidelstetten I made a wonderful hike along here, completely without any traffic. Keep your eyes open when choosing the route.

The "Camp Golf" gives a little detour into the recent history of the FRG. If you walk up the mountain from the hiking car park, you can see the so-called camp golf.
Until the beginning of the 1990s, American nuclear warheads were allegedly stored there and guarded by the Bundeswehr. Part of the structure and location of the buildings can still be seen.

Between the late 1960s and the early 1990s, the contents of the Gulf special ammunition depot were among the best-kept secrets. Today, explosives from a civilian company are stored in the so-called camp “J”, which belongs to the municipality of Hohenstein. The city of Trochtelfingen has rented out the adjacent camp “K” with its 16 bunkers to private individuals and clubs.

Looking back: The decision was made in the Bonn Ministry of Defense in the mid-1960s. The new special ammunition storage facility called Golf is being built not far from the Engstinger Eberhard Finckh barracks in the Haider community forest. The almost 15 hectare area is also located in the districts of Trochtelfingen and Meidelstetten in the Swabian Alb.

On November 20, 1967 everything was done. The Tübingen Federal Property Office buys the forest from the two municipalities for a total of 240,000 marks. The contracts state, among other things, that the site will be used “for military defense purposes”. Shortly afterwards, construction of the so-called ammunition shelter begins.

Next to the guard building there are two watchtowers. To the left of the entrance is the heating center, behind it the “Maintenance & Assembly” building, in which minor repairs to the warheads are planned. The emergency generator is diagonally opposite. There is also a fire extinguishing pond as well as positions and trenches. A few meters further there are two bunkers built into the slope. The entire area is surrounded by triple fencing and anti-tank barriers.

As a NATO member, the Bundeswehr is obliged to store nuclear warheads from the American army in the Federal Republic of Germany. First for the Sergeant missiles, then from the mid-1970s onwards for the more powerful Lance missiles. They are kept in Camp Golf, which the military calls just “J.”

In the “K” camp, which is located a stone's throw away in the Trochtelfinger district, the rocket motors and Bundeswehr ammunition are stored in ten small and six large bunkers.
