The lock, designed by Willem Loré and dating from 1729, was part of a hydraulic engineering complex that regulated the drainage of the Frisian bay into the Wadden Sea and enabled land reclamation. Although the lock lost its original function after the damming of the Lauwerszee in 1969, it still plays a role in Frisian water management, discharging excess water.
