The Petruskapelle in Alexisbad (Harzgerode) was consecrated to Saint Peter (Peter). Simon, nicknamed Petrus (rock), was a fisherman on Lake Genesareth when he - together with his brother Andreas - was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisherman of men". According to the Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two millennia long line of popes - currently Francis - are in his successor. On statues and paintings, Peter is almost always shown with two keys in hand. This attribute refers to the Bible verse in Matthew: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; what you will bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and what you will loosen on earth will be loosened in heaven ”(Chapter 16, verse 19).
Together with Paul, Peter is also known as the "princes of the apostles"; their common feast day in the saints calendar is on June 29th.

The St. Peter's Chapel in the historic spa resort of Alexisbad / Harz was built in 1815 as a tea pavilion for the Duke Alexius of Anhalt-Bernburg. The striking building in Anhalt-Gelb is located in the town center, directly on the main road 185 and is easily accessible via a small, white wooden bridge over the Selke. The simple classical form of the building was designed according to Schinkel's designs. The later owner of the Alexisbad and the pavilion was Duchess Friederike von Anhalt. As there was no church in Alexisbad, divine services were held every 14 days in the pavilion, which was rebuilt into a chapel. When Alexisbad was sold for the last time in 1933, the Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Harzgerode acquired the chapel. In the GDR era, the chapel deteriorated rapidly, but could be put back into service after a thorough renovation in 1992. Since 1999 there are concerts and devotions, since 2007 also weddings.
