Klopstock is considered the founder of experiential poetry and German irrationalism. His work spanned much of the Enlightenment. However, unlike most Enlightenment thinkers, he was not committed to reason but is considered a member of what is known as sensibility. His engagement with German language and poetry paved the way for free rhythms, such as those later used by Goethe and Hölderlin. Klopstock also fought against the strict use of rhyme according to the Opitz school. He brought new dignity to the profession of poetry.
