The Ottmarsheim Octagon is a smaller replica of the Aachen Palatinate Chapel. The pillar decoration of the gallery is so distinctive that other models are ruled out. The sides facing the main nave largely correspond to the original. On the outside, the church in Ottmarsheim is also octagonal, while the Aachen model dissolves the octagon into a 16-corner. The transition between the smaller inner octagon and the larger octagon of the surrounding wall is balanced out by wedge-shaped yokes. But not only the floor plan is simplified in Ottmarsheim, the vaults and pillars are also simpler, the architectural decoration is particularly simple and a reflection on ancient traditions is no longer possible recognize.

Why the founder chose this architecture is ultimately speculation. The viable arguments put forward are:

    - that the function of a tomb was the focus, just like the Aachen Palatine Chapel as Charlemagne's tomb, and that this was imitated,

    - this reflects a renewal of Carolingian traditions that was widespread in the 11th century,

    - the Habsburg landgraves wanted to build their own Palatinate chapel here.
