During World War II, the buildings and barracks of the former emigration and registration and control station for emigrants were transformed into the so-called Police Substitute Prison, commonly known as Rosengarten or the vestibule of Oświęcim.
Prisoners (20,000 people), after an "investigation" and torture, were sent to camps from here, incl. to Auschwitz-Birkenau or to public executions. 204 people died in the prison alone.
The prison functioned until January 26, 1945. In the area of 19,800 square meters surrounded by a high fence, there were 3 brick buildings, 3 barracks, a bunker-prison, 2 guard towers and a machine gun position. The commanders of the prison were Hans Thomas and Karl Reichel.
After the entry of the Red Army, the Polish authorities established a Penal Camp on February 5, 1945. Silesians accused of national treason because of being entered into the 1st or 2nd group of the German Nationality List and German citizens were imprisoned there.
Until the liquidation of the camp in 1947, as a result of disastrous sanitary conditions and violence, 2,331 out of several thousand arrested people died.
