Saaleck Castle was built by the Margraves of Meissen.
He had the castle as a fief and the right to exercise jurisdiction and collect tithes. The castle changed hands many times before the Reformation.
Then the castle began to fall into disrepair. The abandoned castle served the farmers in the area as a quarry, only the two round towers remained.
It was first mentioned in 1140, issued by the Naumburg bishop Udo I. On October 3, 1819, the first history association was founded here. A diorama shows wild horse hunters in the Saale valley 15,000 years ago. New special exhibitions are presented every year.

Saaleck Castle is located on a single mountain below the sister castle Rudelsburg in the Saale valley. The complex, which dates back to the 12th century, was relatively small due to the lack of space and in the 16th century consisted of two round towers, between which buildings were probably still located. A gate kennel, the gate, the curtain wall, parts of a building and the two impressive and high keep have been preserved to this day. The towers have a diameter of ten meters and two meters thick walls. One of the two can be walked on and provides a far-reaching view of the valley and Rudelsburg Castle. Inside is a museum.
