The Großer Zernsee lies between the town of Werder (Havel), which occupies its southwestern bank, and the district of Golm, about one kilometer behind its eastern bank. The lake is bordered to the south by the railway bridge, to the northwest by the Kleiner Zernsee, both lakes separated by the bridge of the A10 federal highway, and to the northeast by the mouth of the Wublitz, a tributary of the Havel. The Großer Zernsee is an important link for recreational boat traffic on the Havel with natural shore zones to the Golmer Luch and in the nationally important biotope network with the Wublitzrinne
