The old warehouses along the canal reveal the former hustle and bustle. Ships docked and cast off here and you could hear rattling wheels and the pounding of horses' hooves all day. If you follow the quay, you will pass no fewer than 28 state and 11 municipal monuments. As if you stepped into a painting.
Seals used to swim by here from time to time. For a long time, the city's oldest harbor district had a direct connection to the sea. Wait until the water is the right height? The busy people of Groningen had no time for that. They built a high pier, the Hoge der A, for loading and unloading at high tide. On the other side of the canal there was a low jetty for the ebb tide, the location of the A. So trading could continue without interruption.

As is often the case on canals and canals in the old Dutch cities, here in Groningen there are also wonderful old warehouses that give an idea of the hustle and bustle of olden times and, next to the old, historic ships and the cozy houseboats, are simply beautiful to look at...
