In the period before the construction of good roads, i.e. around 1900, water transport was one of the most important means of transport for both goods and people. The villages of Peize and Roderwolde had a close connection with the Peizerdiep, the Peizer and Roderwolder Schipsloot and a small port.
The old waterway connection was connected to the Hoendiep and thus created a connection with the city of Groningen.
