Centuries earlier, the Weißeritz had shifted scree to the north and an island-like elevation was created: today's eastern enclosure. A document from 1206, in which the name "Dresdene" appears for the first time, also mentions the village "Oztrov". In Slavic it means something like island. Increasing rail and ship traffic at the end of the 19th century required new solutions within the urban area.
