    Along the path up the Schloßberg from Karmeliterplatz, you pass the Franzosenkreuz (French Cross) at the first bend in the uphill road. The following story surrounds it:

    An escaped convict from the Schloßberg prison is said to have freed himself from his bonds here, at this spot. In gratitude for his successful escape, he later had a wooden cross erected. The Estates replaced it with a larger one featuring a figure of Christ in 1852.


    At this cross, a parliamentarian was killed by a bullet fired from the Tollhaus (today's Folklore Museum) in 1809 during the French siege of the Schloßberg.
