The Frauentorturm (Women's Gate Tower) was once part of Nuremberg's city wall. It is located directly at the entrance to the Handwerkerhof (Handwerkerhof), a popular destination for visitors from far beyond the region's borders. The impressive tower was probably built in its current form at the end of the 14th century. The structure once guarded the most vulnerable area on the southeast side of the city wall. The associated Frauentor (Women's Gate) provided access to Regensburg and other southeastern towns. Since payments to the gatekeeper are documented from 1386 onward, the completion of this structure must have been around this time at the latest.

The Königstor was a gate through the Nuremberg city wall and is today one of the main entrances to the southern part of Nuremberg's old town.

After the construction of the main train station in the southeast of the old town, another gate exit through the Nuremberg city wall was needed in addition to the Frauentor. In 1849, a neo-Gothic gate was completed between the Frauentorturm and the Salzstadel, on whose site the Nuremberg Artists' House was built in the 1900s, according to plans by Bernhard Solger and named after Königsstraße. The gate was soon unable to cope with the growing traffic and was demolished in 1892.

The area of the wall between the Marientor and the Königstor is called the Königstormauer. The alley inside the city wall was then named Königstormauer and the main road outside it was named Königstorgraben, which leads into the station square.
