A relaxing pub to stop by for a short break. We sat indoors (outdoor seating is also available) and enjoyed our drink while overlooking the River Thames.

This historic pub lays claim to being the site of the oldest riverside tavern, dating from around 1520. It had a bad reputation in former times being a meeting place for sailors, smugglers, cut-throats and footpads. In the 17th century, it became the hostelry of choice of "Hanging" Judge Jeffreys, scourge of the Monmouth Rebellion. Either go on the pub's balcony or walk through the small alleyway on the right to see a replica gallows and noose hanging by the pub's window, commemorating his custom.
