Fine-grained reed sandstone, which was well suited for building, was mined in the quarry. The origin of the reed sandstone is explained by geologists with a large river system, which flowed through Europe more than 200 million years ago and flowed to a primordial sea in today's Alpine region. One of the arms of the river flowed along the edge of the Schönbuch, where Pfaffenberg and Heuberg are today. Several information signs are set up. It's definitely worth a visit 🤩👍🤩👍

Reed sandstone used to be mined in the quarry. Numerous buildings such as the Wendelsheim town hall, the Rottenburger Eisenbahnbrühe or the entrance area of the Wilhelma were built with stones from this quarry. The quarry was in operation until the end of the 1960s.
