In Effeln alone there are 32 wayside shrines from different families. What is special about Effeln is that these are made of Rüthener sandstone (although the Anröchtes quarries are so close). This is because the Effelner were supposed to cover their goods and goods needs in Rüthen from 1657 in order to strengthen the economic power of the city after the 30 Years War.
Until the municipal reorganization in 1975, Effeln was closely associated with Rüthen.
