There are two different colored natural stones from the Anröchter stone, which is often incorrectly referred to as the Anröchter dolomite. There is a green type, also called green sandstone, green stone, and a bluish type, Anröchter blue. It is a limestone deposit that is extracted in the Soester Börde. These natural stones come from the Turonium, a level of the Upper Cretaceous.

Anröchte was already well known for stone quarrying in the Middle Ages. The stone was created around 120 million years ago. It owes its color to the mineral glauconite. Further components are quartz and carbonates. Glauconite also provides information on the history of the origin of the sand-lime brick. This mineral originated on the seabed of the primeval sea in less and thereforewarm water depth, an ideal habitat for animals and plants of all kindsThe stone was formed by deposits on the bottom of the primeval sea. The fossils immortalized in the deposits such as snail and mussel shells, sea urchin sponges, corals, microscopic creatures and plant remains give the Anröchter stone its lively appearance.
