It has been - and still is - the subject of numerous criticisms both in terms of aesthetics (the art critic Vittorio Sgarbi called it "a horror") and in the political field for its high costs (which are subject to suspicions of irregularities, now investigated by the judiciary) and for the works still to be completed, decades after their beginning.
