The Meerbruchswiesen are an ideal breeding and resting area for numerous endangered bird species, a large wetland that provides a habitat for rare plant and animal species. In the areas near the sea, woody plants have been scattered, left to nature and thus another protected zone has been created.
For several years now, a pair of sea eagles have also been breeding at Lake Steinhude. The "king of the skies" has built a nest in the top of a dead poplar tree, which is visible to the naked eye. From an observation point, however, you can get a good look into the nest with a coin-operated telescope.
