Pontoon Bridge of Fossalta di Piave

Bridge that crosses the river Piave, sacred to the homeland. Near the bridge it is possible to admire the house where Hemingway stayed.

View of the pontoon bridge from the upper embankment. There are only seven pontoon bridges currently functioning in Italy, two of which are in this area! In addition to the Zamuner pontoon bridge in Fossalta di Piave, it is also possible to see the Caposile one.

The first documented news of a crossing service on the Piave river between the towns of Fossalta and Noventa dates back to 1277. In that distant past the connection between the two banks served the Calnova, a very popular road as a short route between Venice, Motta di Livenza and Upper Friuli. In 1940 a floating pontoon was used to cross heavy vehicles, while a boat was reserved for people. In 1951 the first fixed structure was installed, a bridge on wooden caissons that the British troops had used in the last world war, which was subsequently replaced with concrete barges. The current structure, a floating steel bridge, was inaugurated in March 2000 with two different lanes in the direction of travel.

Crossing the bridge ("the Pass" for the locals) is subject to the payment of a fee and has been managed by the Zamuner family for many years.
