The Herzogshof (also called the "Painted House") is a building in Graz's Herrengasse, the front of which is completely painted.

It was first mentioned in documents in 1360. This is where the Dukes of Styria granted fiefdoms to their subjects. When Graz Castle was completed in 1450, it was no longer needed for this purpose. The facade was painted for the first time around 1600 by the court painter of Emperor Ferdinand II and later architect of his mausoleum, Giovanni Pietro de Pomis.

The house changed hands several times until it came into the possession of the money changer Franz von Lathurner. Around 1742, he had the house re-frescoed by the Vorau painter Johann Mayer, a student of Johann Cyriak Hackhofer. The painting covers the entire facade, 220 m², and shows Greek and Roman gods.

In 1382, a delegation from Trieste was received in the Duke's Court. They placed their country under the protection of the Habsburgs to avoid being conquered by Venice. Trieste remained part of Austria until the end of the First World War.

A wall tattoo in Herrengasse? Of course! Greek and Roman gods meet on the facade of the Herzoghof in the center of Graz. The house was first painted in 1600. The Baroque painter Johann Mayer decorated it with the "divine" frescoes in 1742 and so it has always been known as the "Painted House". Anyone who takes a moment to immerse themselves in the pictures will experience an intense moment of immersion in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city.

        Painted House & Duke's Court

The facade of the house takes you into Greco-Roman mythology.
