With the closure of the Keseling brewery (Felsenkeller) in December 1922, a traditional trade in Duderstadt ended. As early as the 14th century, the city treasurer was earning income for the use of the city's brewing pan. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the art of brewing was in full bloom in Duderstadt. In 1560 the elector issued new brewing regulations with more precise regulations for the brewing process and the substances to be used (wheat, barley, hops and other ingredients). In the second half of the 16th century, beer export was one of the city's main sources of income. The beer was exported to Erfurt, Regensburg and Mainz, among others, and is said to have also been drunk at the Viennese court. Around 1620 the Duderstädter beer brewery reached its peak with 10,000 to 20,000 barrels (40,000 to 50,000 hectoliters) annually. Over 350 houses had brewing justice - the right to brew beer. The importance of brewing was declining until the 19th century.Source: ecological-historical city guide city of Duderstadt.
