Artur Hammer (born May 30, 1884 in Leipzig) lived with his wife and two sons at Lüneburger Strasse 8 in Essen. At the beginning of the First World War he evaded military service by going to the Netherlands, as he was a staunch pacifist. After the end of the First World War he returned to Essen. When he refused the "Hitler salute" and expressed himself critical of Adolf Hitler, he was arrested on March 26, 1936 and sentenced on August 7, 1936 to 18 months in prison. After the beginning of the Second World War, he was arrested again on October 11, 1939, transferred to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and finally transferred to the Groß-Rosen concentration camp on March 16, 1942. Artur Hammer was murdered on April 6, 1942 in the Groß-Rosen concentration camp.

One of 2 stumbling blocks in Essen Frohnhausen (as of May 2021), here on Lüneburger Str.! I think this is a very good thing to remember the story of the Holocaust as long and as obviously as possible and to put at least a small memorial to the victims! Have a look at stolpersteine.eu - maybe you can support the cause so that there will soon be even more stones!

The aim of the series is described on the ARD Mediathek website with the simple words: "The WITNESS OF THE TIME series traces the fate of people who had to endure the terror of the Nazi regime as children, teenagers or young adults." Many individual fates of Jewish citizens from that unfortunate time of National Socialism - who survived and can give authentic testimony - are documented in the film contributions, for example under the title "Despite everything" by CHRISTIAN PFEIL
