"... The botanical garden has a long history. The oldest parts of the garden date from 1799, when a mansion was located at what is now the botanical garden. In 1933 the enthusiast Father Peter Jochum started a botanical garden to support biology classes at the monastery Missionaries brought plant seeds from all over the world to Steyl for the garden of Father Jochum. Various parts of the garden still date from this time.
