Around 1700, many people had settled in the area in front of the city walls, and the Spandau suburb with its own church emerged. In 1731 the city wall was expanded at the behest of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I. The Spandau suburb was now part of Berlin. The Hackesche Markt was built according to plans by city commander Hans Christoph Graf von Hacke, who was supposed to develop open spaces in this area. Today's Hackesche Markt was created.
