There may have been a chapel on the site of the current church as early as the 8th century. In 1172, a Romanesque church building was first mentioned, perhaps a cruciform church with a crossing tower. In 1453 the church was destroyed by war. The church was restored in Gothic style. In 1603 the tower was struck by lightning and so badly damaged that it had to be rebuilt in 1661, probably with stones from the castle.
The church was soon found to be too low. In 1723 the choir was raised and in 1757-1758 the lower church and the transept arms were enlarged in Baroque style.

The parish church of Our Lady of the Visitation is the heart of Rupelmonde, a municipality of modest size but with an urban appearance. This is due to a glorious medieval past, when Rupelmonde had developed into a small walled city.

The current Baroque church building was constructed in four major construction phases. The tower was built around 1661, but probably preserves an older base. The choir was built in 1723, the church nave and transepts were rebuilt in 1757 and 1758. The Sunday school and sacristy were finally added in 1844. After war damage, the Sunday school was rebuilt in the mid-20th century as a Week Chapel. The construction history of the church is very well documented. The building has been protected as a monument since 1936 because of its artistic, historical and archaeological value.

Very beautiful church, with beautiful light reflection in the windows inside
