The Hassel coking plant was shut down in 1999, and the structural facilities were demolished in the following years. From 2016 to 2020, an ecological open space with a high quality of stay was created on an area of more than 30 hectares - the Glückauf Park Hassel - Park of Change. Since June 2020 it has been part of the local recreation offer in the quarter. At first, the park was best known under its working title “District Park”. The new name was selected by a jury from 90 suggestions from citizens.

The new park consists of three areas: the existing forest in the western part, a recreation area around the beautiful new lake in the northern part and an agriculturally used southern part. You can already see gray herons and other animal species at the lake. In the northern part of the park, the Hassel district park is connected to the national cycle path network via the "Allee des Wandels".
The new central entrance area of the park is the green area “Am Freistuhl”: For this purpose, the area has been redesigned and opened up in the direction of the former coking plant. In addition, bright green pipes were used as a defining element at all entrances to the district park. The shape is reminiscent of the former industrial use of the area and also cites the district heating pipeline that crosses the Hassel district. Signposts or benches, for example, are also constructed from these tubes.
Another highlight will soon be created in the middle of the park with a new skate facility. Even if the vegetation is still very sparse, a visit is recommended now, as the view from the "pyramids" is very nice. You can see the Schollen dump or the old "Westerholt" mine. It is worth it ..
