In the former Hugo colliery there is a small museum focusing on mining and Schalke 04. The surrounding area has been beautifully restored and equipped with wide gravel hiking trails.

When the Hugo II/V mine in Gelsenkirchen-Buer was closed in 2000, it was one of the most modern and efficient mines in the Ruhr region, with its almost 3,900 employees. Part of the surface facilities, including the winding machine house and the shaft frame of Shaft II, were saved from demolition as an industrial monument. In addition, the "small museum" run by a sponsoring association preserves the memory of the history of the mine and the Ruhr region.

The collection is spread over two locations. In the nearby Schüngelberg mining colony, built in 1897, there is "the small museum", a dense collection of curiosities and memorabilia from various mining locations. In the engine house of Shaft II, where one of the formerly largest and most powerful electric winding machines in the world is located, there are further collections. Two large rooms here are dedicated to the Schalke 04 football club, which has close ties to the town and the mine. The outdoor area includes a mine locomotive with wagons and a bell from the nearby Apostles Church, which served as a contact point for the miners during the time of protests and demonstrations against the mine closure.
