The Werra bridge at Wacha was for a while rather the symbol of disunity. Because it is almost directly on the former inner German border and was closed until the opening of the border in 1989. Since then it has been called the "Bridge of Unity". If you drive here, it is worthwhile to research a bit about the bridge and its turbulent history.

The Werach bridge Vacha is a 225 m long stone arch bridge from the Middle Ages, which connects the Thuringian Vacha with the Hessian Philippsthal. Today, the building is used as a pedestrian and cycle bridge. The ecumenical pilgrimage route Görlitz-Vacha leads over the Werra bridge. Here the Way of St. James through the Rhön in the direction of Fulda connects. Next to the bridge overlooking the city, stands a sculpture that was inspired by the pedestrian traffic light figures. The art project is called "Unity Man" and was set up on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of German Unity.

At the northern end of the bridge you can still see the course of the border wall as a white line on the street .... this ends at the "house on the border" ... this house was 2/3 in Hesse and 1/3 in the former GDR. On the bridge there is an info board to it .... by the way, a book was written about it. ..
