The Meersbeemden are part of the Herk valley. This nature reserve is located in Borgloon, between Tongeren and Sint-Truiden and on the border with Vochtig-Haspengouw. The area around the Meersbeemden was dominated by mill activities for a long time.

The area has traditionally been known for its wet hayfields. Due to the mill activities, the upstream lands remained very wet. They were therefore used as wet hayfields for a long time. Poplars grow in a significant part of the area, but attempts are being made to develop marsh marigolds. In Helshoven, the poplar forest was converted into hayfields.

The pools in the area are intended as a home for salamanders and brown and green frogs. The yellow wagtail breeds at the old railway bridge and you can regularly see a kingfisher. The Scottish Galloway cattle that graze the area are also a typical feature of the landscape.

In addition to many other species, if you are lucky you can see a kingfisher, badger or middle spotted woodpecker.
