The Stockstadt-Erfelder Altrhein is a 16.4-kilometre-long arm of the old Rhine on the right bank of the Rhine in the Hessian Ried, which branches off from the main stream below Biebesheim and rejoins it 5.2 kilometers further north above Oppenheim, after having previously flown in a 5.9-kilometre to north-east sweeping loop past the eponymous towns of Stockstadt am Rhein and Erfelden. Together with the main stream of the Rhine, it encloses the largest Hessian Rhine island, the Kühkopf. The Altrhein is an essential part of the nature conservation, FFH and bird sanctuary Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue.
