Tips

  • Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. George
"The church was founded in the middle of the 14th century as a town or market church. At first it was a third smaller. In 1606 the town church was badly damaged by the second major town fire. It has had its tower since 1899. During the construction of the tower the church was thoroughly renovated inside and out. The altar, built by Georg Dollart in 1695, is particularly worth seeing. The altarpiece shows the unity of the Lord's Supper and the sacrificial meal in a particularly striking way. The blood of Christ flows from his side directly into the Lord's Supper chalice. A special feature is the crowd of guests at the Lord's Supper. The painter depicted the dignitaries of the time and their wives. Epitaphs (memorial stones) can be seen inside the church. At the height of the roof cornice - directly next to the tower walls - is probably the oldest sundial in the Osnabrück region." • The castle and Hanseatic town of Fürstenau The historic fortress town of Fürstenau was first mentioned in 1344 and has a turbulent history of the Thirty Years' War and religious conflicts behind it. The first building in Fürstenau was the castle, built by the Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück as part of the fortress and protection against the County of Tecklenburg. The historic houses of the farmers who settled there at that time can still be seen in the town centre of Fürstenau today. The spacious castle park, the restored official prison and the bastion also form the historic townscape. The old town gate "Hohes Tor" and the market square with the old town hall and the Protestant church make the old castle and Hanseatic town of Fürstenau an interesting place worth seeing.
