Unfortunately, the Unterbach house is rarely open to the public on special occasions. The castle grounds were probably first expanded into a castle around 900, but there is no historical evidence for this. It was first documented as a knight's seat in 1169. Presumably around 1300 there was the massive expansion of the fortification with surrounding walls up to 1.20 meters thick, four towers with walls up to two meters thick and loopholes, surrounded by a wide moat.
The gate tower with parts of the drawbridge mechanism, the court tower and a round tower are still preserved today. Authentic knight material is said to still be in the towers.
The gardens of the castle and the surrounding area were created by the well-known landscape architect Maximilian Weyhe and have been recreated according to old plans since 2006 by Reinhart Zech, the owner of the Unterbach house.
