The river arises in Georgensgmünd in the district of Roth at 342 m above sea level. NHN through the union of Franconian and Swabian Rezat.

From there the Rednitz flows northwards via Roth, Büchenbach, Rednitzhembach, Penzendorf and Schwabach. Significant for the old cultural landscape are the numerous old mills, especially in the upper section up to Roth, often today only living spaces or small industrial companies.

For Nuremberg, apart from the statistical district 551 with the districts of Mühlhof and Lohhof, the Rednitz forms roughly the western border of the city area and touches the neighboring communities of Stein, Oberasbach and Zirndorf to the west.

In Fürth it flows west past the old town and shortly thereafter joins at an altitude of about 283 m above sea level. NHN with the Pegnitz, which comes east of the Fürth city center from the direction of Nuremberg's old town, to Regnitz.
