Monte Rione or Rivòn is the highest peak of the Novegno massif (1691m): from this panoramic terrace you can look out over Pasubio, the Posina Valley below, the Asiago Plateau, the Novegno basin itself and the Vicenza Plain.Precisely because of its central and dominant position, in the Great War the hill was heavily fortified by the Italian army: a long trench defends the northern side, the side facing the enemy; a series of tunnels, observatories and artillery positions are dug along the western ridge, connected by a mule track that reaches Monte Cogolo; towards the Busa del Novegno, sheltered from enemy fire, in addition to the fort of the same name, the remains of numerous artefacts such as shelters, casemates, depots and the powder magazine are still visible.
The artillery (2 149mm cannons in 'barbetta') was positioned on the floor in front of the terrace: the low wall with niches for projectiles is characteristic.Curiosity: this peak was originally called M. Rivòn, but due to an error by a military cartographer it was called M. Rione and remained so in modern cartography.
