Fort VI is north of Gleuler Str.
As part of the new fortress belt, construction work began as early as 1873 and was the first plant to be built.

In 1876 the fort was completed so that it could be used for the first time.

Like all fortresses, Fort VI was designed and built as an artillery fort with infantry support.
The neighboring forts were at a distance of 3450m (FortV) / 3000m (Fort VII) away.
The firing effective distances were further minimized by the construction of intermediate works.
So that the forts and intermediate works could optimally cover each other.

With the introduction of explosive ammunition, the Cologne fortresses had to be strengthened. For cost reasons, the Kehl barracks were only partially reinforced.
In a subsequent modernization measure, new components such as spaces between spaces (Fort VI & VII), connection batteries and watchtowers were installed in the particularly threatened fortresses.

Fort VI is one of the few fortresses that have received the entire modernization program.
Furthermore, the fort was converted into an infantry fort, the gun beds with their trusses were cleared.
Instead, the factory surface was partially concreted.
The shoulder capons and the pointed capons were torn down and replaced by concrete shoulder and pointed trench weirs.

In 1921 the fort was demolished according to the Versailles Treaty.

In the subsequent period of use, 2 apartments were set up in the demolished Kehl barracks, the entire facility was to be converted into a daytime forest school with sports grounds, during World War II emergency accommodation for bombed-out citizens,
today a park with a rock garden in the northern moat.

Today the Kehlkaserne is used by the Sports Department of the City of Cologne.
Of course there are also appropriate sports facilities.
Today there is a water system in the former glass (Decksteiner Weiher).

In order to get a better overview of the fort I have uploaded the plans from table 3 and 4.
Unfortunately, they have already suffered from the weather, but this does not detract from their use.
      Have fun exploring!

Part of the last outer city fortifications at the end of the 19th century, today used by the Cologne Sports Office. To the north of it there is a small ditch oasis, the rock garden.
