Huize Hunderen was originally a so-called Havezate, a fortified castle. The house was built in the 17th century. There is a park forest and a canal near the house. The park forest contains, among other things, a few impressive old ash trees. The trees alternate with open areas and shrubs. This variety is an ideal living environment for different birds. Also very special, such as the Kingfisher. So keep your eyes open and who knows, you might spot it today!

Huize Hunderen is a monumental country house on the estate "Het Hunderen" in the Gelderland town of Twello.

Originally, "Huize Hunderen" was a manor. The building dates from the 17th century. Through his marriage to Helena van Heerdt in 1646, the manor came into the possession of Gijsbert Schimmelpenninck van der Oije. The house subsequently had several owners until the country estate was purchased in 1807 by Johannes Kerkhoven, an Amsterdam banker. He had the house extensively renovated. Kerkhoven married Anna Jacoba van der Hucht in 1817. Several of their children were born here. Hella Haasse describes in "Heren van de tee" the house and estate Hunderen in the time of the Van Kerkovens as an "Eldorado".[1]

The house also had several owners afterwards. The then owner had the house renovated again in 1863. In 1970 the estate was purchased by the Het Geldersch Landschap Foundation.
