At the end of the 18th and throughout the 19th century, Houffalize was an important center for tannery and milling. The remains of the Lemaire mill and the Lemaire tannery, located along the Ourthe in rue Moulin Lemaire, bear witness to this. The mill is said to date back to the 18th century, while the Lemaire tannery is said to have been founded around the year 1830. The tannery made "hard leather", from which shoe soles were made, while the "upper leather" and "leather ropes" were made in another tannery in the region.
