You can no longer see the Sint-Ludgeruskerk itself here, but with a little imagination you can see it again standing on the remaining foundations. As early as 1100 there would have been a small church here, which became bigger and bigger over the years. Unfortunately, all that effort was undone when the structure was destroyed in the Eight Years' War. However, this was done from a tactical point of view: if the church were to remain standing, it could serve as a shelter for the Spaniards. And of course that was not the intention. At the end of the 16th century, another church was built on this very spot, but it also had to endure a lot. During the storm surge of 1825 it suffered a lot of damage and shortly afterwards the church tower was also hit by lightning, resulting in the church burning down. The foundations of the church that you now see here were made visible later. Well, at least enough material to spark that imagination!
