Massenhausen is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 1300, in which the knights Stephan and Konrad von Horhausen (today: Niedermarsberg) donated a hoof (arable land) in Massenhausen to the Augustinian convent Aroldessen. Its mention in an undated, but certainly from the early 13th century, tithe list of the Westphalian monastery of Corvey indicates the older existence of the village of Massenhausen. The church is the oldest building in the village.

As part of the regional reform in Hesse, Massenhausen lost its independence and was incorporated into the city of Arolsen on December 31, 1971.
