Frankonia fountain on the Residenzplatz. Würzburg
The Frankonia fountain - a popular meeting point at the Residenz
The Frankonia fountain is an impressive fountain on the Residenzplatz in Würzburg, which captivates numerous tourists on their way to the Würzburg Residenz.
At the beginning, the Frankonia fountain was still called the Luitpold fountain or Prince Regent Luitpold fountain, as it was intended to honor the prince regent of the same name. However, it is now known as the Frankonia fountain, which, like the Residenz Palace and the Residenzplatz, is part of the Würzburg Residenz and is therefore also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Frankonia fountain was originally intended not only to beautify the city of Würzburg, but also to commemorate the Franconian people and their heroes. The fountain, built in 1894, was designed by the architect Gabriel von Seidl.
What are the figures on the Frankonia fountain all about?
The statue on the base in the center of the fountain is intended to represent Frankonia, the female symbol of Franconia. Her gaze is directed towards the cathedral. She is surrounded by images of the poet Walther von der Vogelweide, the painter Matthias Grünewald and the sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider.

The Bavarian Ministry of Finance and Home Affairs is spending around 500,000 euros on this measure. The aim was to present the restored fountain as early as May 2020. However, Corona thwarted the palace association's bill. "An exact end of the work cannot be predicted due to the current situation," said this editorial team when asked. From today's perspective, however, it is assumed that the restored fountain will be completed and commissioned in spring 2021.

Apparently the work is still going on (as of the end of June 2021)

Very beautiful fountain in front of the residence.
On March 12, 1891, Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria, who was born in Würzburg, celebrated his 70th birthday. In order to pay homage to him with dignity, considerations about a suitable gift began a few months earlier. The "Lower Franconian District Committee for the Celebration of the Seventieth Birthday of His Royal Highness the Prince Regent", which was made up of around a hundred respected representatives of the Lower Franconia and Aschaffenburg districts, decided in favor of a monumental fountain on the residence square.

According to the Prince Regent's own ideas, he should only be commemorated in an unobtrusive way. The large structure, however, was primarily intended to decorate the city. This gave rise to the basic idea of showing several "outstanding personalities of Franconian folk history" under the crowning figure of Frankonia. The planned fountain was dubbed the "Love Monument of the entire Franconian people" or the "Monumentum Franconiae".

The (Residenzplatz) was chosen as the location of the monument, i.e. the immediate vicinity of the Prince Regent's birthplace. In 1821, the artistically designed Ehrenhof gate was removed in front of the Ehrenhof, leaving room for a new design. Private donations were collected to finance the project, and the districts of Lower Franconia and Aschaffenburg as well as the city of Würzburg also contributed.

Several people were entrusted with the artistic design and implementation: The design of the entire work was by Ferdinand Freiherr von Miller. All bronze figures also came from his Munich studio. The architecture was designed by Munich professor Gabriel von Seidl. H. J. Metzger created the stone figure bases and mussel shells. The large fountain bowl and all masonry work were carried out by master builder Hofmann.

During the construction period, several changes were made to the shapes. The fountain was not unveiled until a good three years after the actual birthday celebration: on June 3, 1894 as part of the Regent's Days.
