🌊💙The Spiegelwaal is the result of a different way of looking at the flood problem. Instead of just raising or strengthening dikes, space for the river is now the starting point...
4 kilometer long branch of the Waal near Nijmegen🧭🌊💙
🌊💙On the east side of the Spiegelwaal there is a threshold, the Oudedijk.
It contains tunnels at different heights. As a result, depending on the water level, more or less water flows from the Waal into the tributary. So the Spiegelwaal is always fed by running water from the Waal.🌊💙

flood protection
THIS is what the Dutch can do👏🏼 🇳🇱

By default, 1.5 percent of the Waal water goes through the Spiegelwaal, but at high tide the ditch can drain up to 15 percent of the Waal water. In the event of extreme floods, flooding can be avoided in the future.
