Heldergem's village church houses the souls of a rich history...
The village, along with Aaigem, Haaltert, Denderhoutem, Kerksken, and Vlekkem, belonged to the Land van Rotselaer. Heldergem only received its own seal in the 15th century.
No remains remain of the estate at Laethem or the Hof ten Hane.
In the 16th century, Heldergem belonged to the lordship of Hoolbeke. In 1096, there was a place of worship here, the altar rights of which the Bishop of Cambrai granted to the Abbey of Geraardsbergen. At the end of the 14th century, the municipality had approximately 170 inhabitants.
