In the church wall of the St-Amanduskerk you can see seven striking niches in honor of Saint Korneel, patron saint of farmers and cattle. The church used to be a little further away. in a place that is still called Old Village. The former church was destroyed by lightning in 1859. only eight citizens of the municipality at the time wanted to keep the church in this damned place, so the new church was built a little further.

    (G. Sonck)

The previous church was on the Old Village. It was enlarged in 1829, but demolished a little later. In 1838 the now existing Kalvaar was built in a corner of the plot.

Construction of the new church, further south, started in 1860. It was inaugurated in 1862. The architect was Edmond de Perre-Montigny from Ghent. The main altar, the side altars, the communion rail and the rood screen were designed by Lodewijk Van Erkel from Borgerhout. The organ has been protected as a monument since 1980. The new church came under the administration of Pastor Joannes Benedictus De Maeyer, who was parish pastor in Heldergem from 1836 to 1874.

The eclectic church has neoclassical and neo-Romanesque style elements. It is a brick church building with a pre-built west tower.

Village church of Heldergem harbors the souls of a rich history...

Together with Aaigem, Haaltert, Denderhoutem, Kerksken and Vlekkem, the village belonged to the Land van Rotselaer. Heldergem only got its own seal in the 15th century.

There are no longer any remains of the estate in Laethem and the ten Hane court.

Heldergem owned the seigniory of Hoolbeke in the 16th century. In 1096 there was a place of worship here, of which the bishop of Cambrai donated the altar rights to the abbey of Geraardsbergen. At the end of the 14th century, the municipality had about 170 inhabitants.

In the 15th century there were 43 houses and 215 inhabitants. The population grew steadily. In the 20th century the villagers mainly worked in agriculture and in the flax industry. Heldergem had 25 looms.

Around 1850 there were 180 farms in Heldergem.

Heldergem is undeniably the village where the largest part of the working class did 'the campaign', especially to Northern France.

It was rightly called 'the French village'. Now it is mainly commuting.
