The two rivers Gerdau and Stederau merge south of Uelzen. From there on one speaks of the Ilmenau. It meanders north through the Lüneburg Heath and on its way also comes through Lüneburg. From here it is navigable over a length of 28.84 km as far as the Elbe at Hoopte, which has become insignificant in terms of traffic. The river is only used by water sports enthusiasts.
The flow speed of the Ilmenau is very high, so it does not freeze over in winters when even the Elbe freezes.
In the south of Lüneburg, in the Tiergarten area, on the right "steep bank" with a view over the floodplains you will find a large boulder with the inscription: "Loreley". Heinrich Heine is said to have written his "Loreley" here in 1823 with a view of the Ilmenau.
