Parallel to the Burgweg, a path leads over stairs and bridges along a Simmerbach tributary in Gemünden. The vegetation was still very wild and romantic in 2018. The path was closed for a while, then the vegetation was trimmed and brand new railings were installed. Now a green vein refines the path to Koppenstein Castle.

The section belongs to the Gemünden Forest Nature Trail. Some information boards explain the animal and plant species that are at home here.

        Gemünden forest nature trail

        On the trail of nature

The aim of the educational forest trail in Gemünden is to point out the indispensable, irreplaceable and also unaffordable services and effects of the forest for us humans. The aim is to awaken understanding for the processes in nature. A densely wooded ridge, the Soonwald, rises southeast of Gemünden on the southern edge of the Hunsrück. With a length of approx. 40 km, it stretches from the Rhine valley near Bingen to the Hahnenbachtal northwest of Kirn. The approximately 5 km long educational forest trail provides insights into the interrelationships of the forest ecosystem. At more than 40 stations with numerous plantings, display boards on the subject of ecology, forests and forest communities, the visitor receives an orientation and experience aid. Trees, bushes, soil plants, mammals, birds and insects within the forest community are presented in detail.
