John of Nepomuk is depicted in a canon costume with a crucifix, a palm tree, and a wreath with five stars, also with a bridge and a river. He is the patron saint of Bohemia; confessors, priests, boatmen, raftsmen, millers, bridges. John of Nepomuk is called in water hazards; for secrecy, protection of property; against defamation, erroneous judgments; in defense of the good reputation. Especially venerated in: Görlitz, Meißen, Regensburg, Salzburg, Vienna.

Saint John Nepomuk was a priest (Vicar General to the Archbishop) in Bohemia who was martyred in Prague in 1393. On royal orders, he was thrown from Prague's Charles Bridge into the Vltava and drowned. To this day, his statue can be found on or on many bridges - or, as here, on the banks of the Rhine in Bonn, in the immediate vicinity of the river. He is not only considered the popular "bridge saint", but is also the patron saint of the secret of confession. In many depictions of himself, he holds a cross in one hand, sometimes with the other he puts a finger to his lips as a sign of silence (about what was heard in confession).

The feast day of Saint John Nepomuk in the calendar of saints is March 20th.
